Internationally-acclaimed hairstylist and founder of the VERNON FRANÇOIS® Collection, Vernon François, has brought his passion and creative flair for hairdressing from his hometown in northern England to the global stage. Vernon’s mission is to empower a generation with the knowledge and confidence to unlock the potential of their hair’s true texture; kinky, coily, curly or wavy.
Vernon’s love for working with textured hair started when he was just eight years’ old. Growing up in a Rastafarian household he remembers Sundays were about “Mum cooking, also braiding our hair for the week ahead.” Vernon always complained about having his hair done, so his Mum suggested he try doing it himself. This was his ‘eureka’ moment. He taught himself how to braid, loc and twist using everything from his Grandmother’s beaded curtains to fringing on the living room rug. It quickly became an obsession and instead of doing homework after school he’d be busy with his creations. Although he didn’t realise it as a child, Vernon is also dyslexic.
At the age of 14, Vernon started working at salon on London’s Oxford Street. He won ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at Black Beauty Hair Awards aged 17; ‘Black Hair Junior Stylist of the Year’ aged 19; and is listed in the ‘Top 20 Influential Black People Under 40’.
Vernon’s work has graced the covers of VOGUE, ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair; plus, features in major spreads in Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Allure, ESSENCE and more. His creations at red-carpet events including the Oscars, Met Gala and film premiers regularly make headlines. Campaigns he has styled hair for include Lancôme and Pirelli Calendar 2017, working alongside iconic photographers such as Mario Testino, Mert & Marcus, Victor Demarchelier, Alexi Lubomirski, Peter Lindbergh and Annie Leibovitz. The Hollywood Reporter’s ‘Top 25 Beauty Moments of the Year’, 2015 and 2016, celebrated Vernon’s creations with Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o; and in June 2017 his work with Serena Williams’ cover of Vanity Fair grabbed global attention.
Vernon François passionately champions the incredible versatility of textured hair. His clients include the Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o; Serena Williams; Solange Knowles; Golden Globe Award winner Tracee Ellis Ross; award winning actresses Ruth Negga, Naomie Harris, Kerry Washington, Uzo Aduba; director and producer Ava DuVernay, Cynthia Erivo and many more. He also serves private clients at a salon in London; many have been with him for over ten years and some travel from around the world for an appointment.
